Back in Time
Although Berchtesgaden is renowned for its untouched nature and immense beauty it is best known for its historical connection to World War II. Becoming a favorite holiday spot for many Nazi Party leaders in the early 1920’s notable names like Herman Goering, Joseph Goebbels, Albert Speer and Adolf Hitler bought up property all through the area. Although most of the buildings were destroyed by the Allies at the end of the war several historic landmarks remain, including a vast tunnel and bunker system and Hitler’s own Eagle’s Nest summerhouse.
Enjoy panoramic views of up to 200 kilometers from Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday present from Martin Bormann, the Eagle’s Nest. Walk in the footsteps of the Führer himself and travel through a hand blasted tunnel 124 meters into the mountain to an ornate elevator lined with shiny brass. In just 41 seconds visitors are transported another 124 meters up through the mountain and into the building itself.

The Obersalzberg’s Nazi Bunkers
At a quick glance you’d think almost all traces of the Nazi’s were bombed away by the Allies at the end of World War II but there is more than meets the eye. During the decades of over-ground construction the Third Reich also built an intricate underground tunnel and bunker system, thinking that’s where they’d have their last stand if it came to it. There are two intact bunker systems open to the public on the Obersalzberg (including plenty of directions to insure no one gets lost!)
